Our Mission
- To provide holistic diabetes self-management education and support that empowers individuals of the African Diaspora in the Greater Sacramento Area, U.S. living with and affected by diabetes to effectively manage their diabetes for a lifetime.
- To support non-profit Diabetics Associations aiding people living with diabetes in Uvira, Kiliba, Sange, & Luvungi (U-KI-SA-LU) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
We will pursue our mission through five pillars: Education, Support, Advocacy, Community Outreach, and Research.
Our Vision
The Africa Institute of Diabetes Self-Management (AIDSM) believes that diabetes self-management education and support should be available to every individual living with and affected by diabetes, in all African Diaspora communities. Unfortunately, the lack of culturally tailored interventions, such as diabetes self-management education and support programs leads to poor diabetes management among people of the African Diaspora, making them at a higher risk for diabetes complications.
AIDSM believes that, for individuals living with and affected by diabetes to be the best self-managers possible, it is essential that they get ongoing self-management education and support to improve A1C levels, prevent diabetes complications and improve quality of life.
